Workshop on RURAL SANITATION organized by CIPART
With a view to enhance capabilities of voluntary organizations for implementation of development programmes in an efficient and cost-effective manner as well as to create a resource, documentation and information centre, the Council for Advancement of people’s Action and Rural Technology has set up the CAPART Institute for Poverty Alleviation and Rural Technology (CIPART) at Janakpuri, New Delhi. The first training workshop was organized at CIPART on 12th and 13th July 2007 on Rural Sanitation for the benefit of voluntary organizations working in rural areas. 21 participants from 19 VOs under the jurisdiction of Regional Centre, Jaipur attended the workshop.
 
The workshop was inaugurated by Smt. Veena Shriram Rao, Director General CAPART by lighting of lamp. Smt. Lakshmi Prasad, DDG, CAPART , Smt. Neena Garg, DDG CAPART and Shri R. P Meena, CVO, CAPART graced the inaugural function. Shri Sanjay Awasthi, Director, CIPART welcomed the participants.
 
The Director General in her inaugural lecture welcomed the first batch of participants and requested for their feedback on various aspects of the workshop. She offered free membership of the CIPART library to all the participants. The Director General also informed the participants about the knowledge portal that CAPART proposes to launch and its application in rural development. She advised the CIPART staff to discuss possible areas of research with representatives of voluntary organizations having grassroot experience. Finally, the DG encouraged the participants to use the knowledge gained from this workshop in project formulation.
 
The main contents of the training workshop were:(i) Overview of CAPART;(ii) Overview of Sanitation and Hygiene Scenario of Rural India;(iii) Need, Concept and Components of Sanitation;(iv) Total Sanitation Campaign and Integration of TSC with Different Government Programmes;(v) Solid and Liquid Waste Management;(vi) Community Mobilization;(vii) Promoting Sanitation and Hygiene Education in Schools/Anganwadis; (viii)Technology Options for Low Cost Toilets; and(ix) CAPART Initiative-Nirmal Gram Abhiyan. Efforts were made to deal the contents in a participatory manner.
 
Resource persons for the workshop included subject matter experts possessing theoretical, practical and field based knowledge. The resource persons were senior officials from reputed NGOs and funding organizations working closely with grassroot level VOs’; Senior Government Officials from the Ministry of Rural Development; Senior lecturer from Delhi School of Social Work, and CAPART’ s own subject specialists. A field visit to the Sulabh Toilet Museum and Technology Park was organized for the participants. Dr. Bindeshwari Pathak, founder of the Sulabh International, shared his experiences with the participants and motivated them to promote sanitation.
 
This was the first in a series of workshops that CAPART proposes to organize on rural sanitation for NGOs from various parts of the country. The feedback was highly positive.
